I opened this blog to keep track a few of my lessons/ideas/etc that spark my interest in education, and to collaborate with fellow teachers. Please feel free to also take a look at my website https://sites.google.com/site/michaelpalagi/ to read a little bit more about me.

I welcome you to comment and share any ideas you may have, advice from others would be very appreciated!

It is mostly a rough journal, so pardon any grammar/spelling mistakes.

Creating Our Own Rubrics

I am now in 2nd grade!!!
Posts from here on our will be about my current second graders (everything preceding was about Kindergarten)

We have been making our own rubrics for awhile now. Trying out different formats for different projects. Seeing students is competent is such a huge part of my philosophy. Giving students opportunities to express themselves, and develop goals and outcomes for their own learning has shown so many benefits. They love getting to help out and set very realistic goals that challenge them, while also giving them choices on how they can complete the project. We create them in the beginning of our inquiry so that students know exactly what they should be working on and exactly how to reach my (and their) expectations.
Here are two of the rubrics we created during our unit of Who We Are.

My students love helping each other and love giving and getting feedback from their friends! They are so happy to look at ways they can do better, and love collaborating with their friends. They have done so well this first month and even started asking for copies indecently (apart from the ones posted on our wall) so they can keep track of their progress.
